Tehran, Iran, September 21, 2011 – Defending champions Japan defeated Thailand 3-0 (25-20, 25-23, 25-16) in Pool C of the preliminary round of the 16th Asian Senior Men's Volleyball Championship at Azadi Hall No. 1 on Wednesday.
Thailand opened the first set on a strong note scoring three consecutive points but Tatsuya Fukuzawa's two consecutive attacks from the back row and a defensive stop easily jolted the Thai lead. Japan's blocking significantly improved as it stopped the Thai attacks from entering the Japanese side and improved their score at 8-3 onto the first TTO.
Thailand have somehow remedied their attacking problems and came back in the set with just a three point deficit. Takahiro Yamamoto provided Japan with smart drop shots. Japan's relaxed offense and good court movement provided them the 25-20 win.
Japan got its real challenge in the second set as Thailand came with a pestering attacking scheme that only allowed Japan to win 25-23.
Japan's struggle in the previous set can still be traced from their movement even with their substantial lead. Thailand's persevering offense could be attributed to the longer rallies in the third set.
Japan tried to shake off its second set blunders from Fukuzawa and Yamamoto's heroics and the excellent defence displayed by their libero Takeshi Nagano. Japan never looked back and controlled the duration of the third set with a 25-16 win.
