Powerful Russia beat Thailand in straight sets

 
Russia celebrate their victory over Thailand

Ekaterinburg, Russia, August 10, 2013 – Russia beat Thailand 3-0 (25-20, 25-23, 22-25) in their FIVB Grand Prix match on Saturday.
In the first set, the spikes of Natalia Goncharova and Irina Zaryazhko helped to give Russia an 8-3 lead. But Thailand fought back to tie the game 11-11. Onuma Sittirak made two aces to put Thailand a point ahead, but Russia fought back hard, and Victoriia Chaplina ended the first set, 25-20.

In the second set the sharp spikes of Tatiana Kosheleva gave Russia a narrow 8-7 lead. The service of Anna Matienko and attacks of Irina Zaryazhko maintained their lead, and a Thai double substitution didn’t help them recover. Tatiana Kosheleva ended the set, 25-23.
Russia dominated the third set, running up to 8-3. Thailand regrouped, but made too many mistakes as they went for winners. Irina Zaryazhko ended the match 22-25.
3,700 volleyball fans watched the match at the Divs Uralochka.
Russia’s Natalia Goncharova was the match’s top scorer with 16 points. Onuma Sittirak got 15 points for the Thais.
Russia face Cuba on Sunday, while Thailand play Italy in the third round of matches this weekend.
